My best friend David use to work at Remo General Store on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. He made friends for life with the other Remo people, like Cheryl & Adam. I always admired the store for capturing the essence of Sydney's youthful imagination. My coffee drinking friends also admired the store for its wonderful coffee and peaceful, friendly atmosphere. I can remember David telling me about all the international and local celebrities who would frequent the store. I never met one, but I grew up to be one ;)

This insightful and inspirational IDEA began life in 1992 as an enameled message pin courtesy of the late (great) Tibor Kalman and our other friends at the
M&Co. Design Labs in New York.

M&Co. (founded by Kalman in 1979 and represented in Australia by REMO) dominated a niche in the US for intelligent provoking design for over 15 years.

Tibor appreciated aesthetics but believed that design was mostly useless if it did not also support a message leading to action e.g. THEM=US.

Maira Kalman (Tibor's wife, core collaborator and the "M" from M&Co.) tells us that the pin's message was originally a reference to Ronald Reagan's non-response to the AIDS epidemic, and an attempted eradication of the perceived wall between the ill and the healthy.

However, we think that the message is BIGGER than any single such application, and can apply to any traditionally polarised situation:

Poor = Rich
Palestinian = Israeli
Black = White
Refugee = Resident (See also Show Mercy)
Member = Club
Customer = Brand (you are here)

And ... here's another quote from Tibor:

"I am in search of the simple elegant seductive maybe even obvious IDEA. With this in my pocket I cannot fail."

| A LONG-TIME FAVORITE
But PLEASE make it long-sleeved as well. Want to be warmer in winter and rollup in summer .... also avoid many cancerous lesions on the forearms.

| excellent party shirt
This shirt is profound. It has started some great conversations at parties while the owner was wearing it out. Also I visted Far Northern Queensland where I managed to confuse a few of the locals - great all round entertainment.

| another field equation?
clearly the work of a master semiotician ~ but ~ what perverse ~ optimism? ~ nice if the ~ REMOTs ~ shipped with a few original pins? ~ like it ~ because its such a ~ great field equation ~ for us all ~ and linear too :) ~ but ~ yellow ~ and ~ black ~ not so sure :(

| Missing Diagonal
Yes, very nice. Profound statement. And all that. But missing the optional black diagonal that one could just zzzzipp on for some of those really close encounters, of the X-kind. You know, for those nicely polarised situations, where one would really like to do unto others, just as ... !*#@!?
